George D. Rowe, 22, teacher, saved Howard R. Masters, 17, student, from drowning, Widewater, Virginia, August 23, 1911. Howard became distressed 30 feet from a raft in the Potomac River, 500 feet from shore, where the water was seven feet deep. Rowe swam from the raft to Howard, and Howard seized him and clung to his shoulder. After making futile efforts to swim and tread water, Rowe sank beneath the surface and, holding Howard up so that his head was above water, walked toward the raft. The raft was pushed slowly toward Rowe, and Rowe met it when he had walked 20 feet, for 15 feet of which distance he was entirely submerged. Rowe had swallowed water and was nauseated and dazed but recovered. 7155-1151
