George E. Ricker died attempting to save Creola Dick from drowning, Mapleton, Pennsylvania, July 4, 1914. Miss Dick, 38, became distressed while swimming in the Juniata River. She grasped a young man near her, and they went beneath the surface. They came up and struggled together. Ricker, 19, signal repairman, swam 30 feet to Miss Dick from a sandbar. He grasped her, or she grasped him, and he went beneath the surface with her and her companion. Miss Dick released her hold on her companion, and he swam to the sandbar. Miss Dick and Ricker came to the surface together and then again disappeared. Both were drowned. 13300-1048
