George F. La Croix, 33, broom manufacturer, saved Ernest J. Poirier, 8, from drowning, Cambridge, Massachusetts, January 27, 1906. Ernest broke through ice on a pond 60 feet from the bank, where the water was 12 feet deep. In going to his assistance, his cousin also broke through. LaCroix, although just having recovered from bronchitis, slid out on the ice into the hole made by the boys and, after freeing himself from the second boy, who had grabbed him around the neck, swam to Ernest and supported him until a ladder was extended to them. All three held to the ladder and were drawn ashore. 893-127
