George H. Paul, 52, farmhand, attempted to save William Hamilton, 60, farmer, from being run over by a train, California, Kentucky, October 2, 1911. Hamilton was standing on the ties of a track, outside the rail, on which a train was approaching at a speed of 60 m.p.h. Paul ran along a path close to the track and, reaching out, tried to pull Hamilton off the ties. Just as Paul touched Hamilton, some part of the locomotive struck his outstretched arm, causing him to spin around several times and throwing him 15 feet from the track. Hamilton was instantly killed. Paul’s arm was broken in two places. 7805-653
