George Howard Donaldson died attempting to save R. McTyeire Tigert from drowning, Newsom, Tennessee, June 8, 1919. While wading in the Harpeth River, Tigert, 22, purchasing agent, was swept from his feet by rough water just below a dam and carried along the face of the dam to a point 112 feet from the bank. He was held against the dam by the force of the water that was pouring over it. From a point in the water that was 50 feet from the bank and 60 feet below the dam, Donaldson, 59, druggist, swam about 85 feet toward Tigert but was then drawn against the dam by a strong backwash. Donaldson finally sank and was drowned. Tigert lost consciousness and was carried to wadable water by the current. He was removed from the water and was revived. 20424-1764
