George Kenneth MacNeil died helping to save John J. Smith from suffocation, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, October 22, 1982. Smith, 55, was overcome by gases in a sewer manhole and fell into seven feet of raw sewage. MacNeil, 36, engineer, entered the manhole, located Smith, and lifted his head above the surface of the sewage. After positioning Smith so that his head remained free of the sewage, MacNeil climbed to the top of the manhole. There he lost consciousness and fell back into the sewage. Smith was removed by other men and was revived. He recovered. MacNeil drowned.
