George L. Bruun died attempting to save Dolly McKinley from drowning, St. Joe, Idaho, May 26, 1917. Dolly, 9, fell from a floating boardwalk into floodwater of the St. Joe River and was carried toward a large raft of logs 100 feet away. Bruun, 49, farmer, ran onto the boardwalk, jumped into the water fully dressed, and swam 30 feet to her. He got her in his arm and tried to swim back toward the boardwalk, but the current carried them slowly toward the logs. They became submerged, and a strong undercurrent carried them under the logs. They were drowned.
