George L. Nelson, 31, draughtsman, saved Hazel Pasco, 40, from drowning, Laguna Beach, California, April 4, 1931. While Miss Pasco was walking on very rough rocks at the base of a cliff that extended 1,000 feet into the Pacific Ocean, a wave broke near her, and she was carried off the rocks into deep water as the water receded. Nelson ran 500 feet on very rough rocks, jumped into the water, swam 250 feet to Miss Pasco, and clasped her with one arm. While swimming with her through breakers three to four feet high, Nelson lost his hold of Miss Pasco several times, but he swam with her 250 feet to the rocks at the cliff. She remained conscious and sustained only slight cuts from the rocks. 30997-2619
