George R. Call, 13, schoolboy, died attempting to save Charles H. Powars, 8, from drowning, Salem, Massachusetts, March 2, 1914. Charles, who could not swim, paddled out from the bank of the North River on a cake of ice and found himself unable to return to shore, because of the current. George boarded a piece of ice a little more than five feet in diameter, paddled to Charles, who was 20 feet from the bank, and tried to help Charles onto his cake. The cake tipped when Charles stepped onto it, and both boys fell into the water. Charles seized George, and both sank and were drowned. 12785-1176
