George R. Dowse, Sr., died attempting to rescue George R. Dowse, Jr., from burning, Niverville, Manitoba, February 21, 1994. At night, George, 10, was asleep in his second-floor bedroom of his family’s house when fire broke out in the basement. His father, Dowse, 37, asleep in a first floor bedroom, awoke and discovered the fire. He alerted other family members and told them to flee the house, which was filled with dense smoke. Realizing that George was unaccounted for, Dowse turned and was last seen running upstairs. The house was shortly engulfed in flames. Dowse and George perished in the fire, their bodies later found near the back door. 68569-7868
