George Russell Reed, 36, skilled laborer, rescued Raymond L. Garrett, 34, skilled laborer, from a fatal fall, Iowa, Louisiana, November 15, 1945. Garrett, sitting in a metal boatswain’s chair, which weighed 40 pounds and was suspended 32 feet above the ground, was painting the outside of a cylindrical steel still. The chair broke loose from a block and tackle which was attached to the top of the still and began to fall. Reed and another man on the ground were controlling the movement of the block and tackle. Yelling to his companion that he would try to break the fall of Garrett in the chair, Reed took a long step to the point toward which Garrett was falling and extended his right arm. The chair struck Reed, knocking him eight feet aside to the ground. At the impact the course of the chair and Garrett was slightly deflected. Garrett sustained injuries to his wrist and leg but recovered. Reed sustained a fractured cheek bone, lacerations above and below the right eye, and bruises. He recovered. 40597-3434
