George Saltamah, 38, deckhand, helped to save Mrs. W. W. McCune, 28, and W. W. McCune, Jr., 6, from drowning, San Bernardino County, California, July 11, 1907. The woman and boy fell from a disabled steamer into the Colorado River at flood stage. Saltamah and another man threw a plank into the water, jumped in, and swam with it to them. The current was too strong to allow them to get to shore, and, as the plank would not sustain the four, the other man left the plank, which Saltamah guided a quarter-mile farther, when he received assistance from shore. He succeeded in landing the woman and boy, all three being almost exhausted. 1856-232
