George T. Garrard saved Paul B. Bence and Harold J. Paxton from drowning, Marion, Indiana, January 9, 1919. While Paul, 7, and Harold, 7, were playing on a ledge of ice along the bank of the Mississinewa River, the ice broke, and the two boys fell into deep water about 15 feet from the bank. Garrard, 21, moulder, who was perspiring from his work in a foundry, jumped into the river from the opposite bank with his clothes on and swam toward the two boys with a light ladder. He had to dodge drifting ice cakes as he swam and once or twice was forced to dive under a large ice cake, but he reached the ledge of ice after swimming 175 feet. Paul and Harold were then clinging to the edge. Garrard climbed upon the ice and with the aid of the ladder and a slab got both boys to the bank. They were blue from cold, and Paul was semiconscious, but they recovered. 19347-1727
