George W. Baird, 26, machinist, attempted to save Max W. McClellan, 39, master mechanic, and Louis J. Hansen, 50, tannery yard foreman, from suffocation, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, June 24, 1929. Although Baird knew there was gas in the sewer, he held his breath and descended the ladder, quickly fastened a rope to McClelland, and then climbed out. McClellan was then drawn out. Baird entered the sewer again, fastened the rope to Hansen, and climbed out again. Hansen was then drawn out. (See case of LOUIS J. HANSEN.) 29722-2399
