George W. Billings, 47, gin pressman, attempted to save Virginia L. Hayes, 8, from being killed by a train, Flippin, Arkansas, April 2, 1919. Virginia and six other persons were in an automobile which stopped on a road one foot trom a track on which a passenger train was approaching. All escaped from the automobile except Virginia and two others. Billings was 150 feet from the automobile and started running toward it when the train was about 125 feet in the opposite direction from it. Billings reached the automobile with his hands extended toward Virginia, but the train struck the automobile at about the same time, and Billings was knocked 10 feet. The train moved about 35 feet farther and then stopped. Billing’s right collarbone was fractured, his left knee cap was dislocated, and he had other minor injuries, being disabled six months. Virginia was uninjured. 19535-1583
