George W. Lemon died saving William K. Dyer from drowning, Virginia Mineral Springs, Virginia, June 14, 1931. While Dyer, 19, laborer, who had an inflated rubber tube on his shoulder, was wading in Craig Creek, he lost his footing and toppled into water nine feet deep 30 feet from the bank. He could not swim. George, 14, schoolboy, waded and then swam 15 feet to Dyer and took hold of him, and Dyer clenched him face to face. During the struggle, in which they repeatedly bobbed up and down, George supported Dyer as he swam and drifted eight feet to a boat that was paddled to them. As Dyer was being pulled into the boat, George sank and was drowned. 31691-2630
