George W. Plots attempted to save James T. Gibney and saved Frank Balint from suffocation, Detroit, Michigan, July 25, 1932. Plots, 36, electric welder, was descending the ladder in the manhole when Gibney, 57, labor foreman, fell from it into the water. Plots went to the bottom and reached to take hold of Gibney, but Gibney then drifted in the sewer beyond his reach. Plots raised Balint, 58, laborer, to a crouching position and tied the rope on him, and as Balint was being raised to the surface, Plots became unconscious and drifted 60 feet in the sewer. He then regained consciousness and waded toward the manhole. A man at the top heard him approaching and descended the ladder. Plots reached the manhole and again lapsed into unconsciousness as he was grasped by the man. The man tied a rope on him, and Plots was pulled to the surface and was revived. (See case of JAMES T. GIBNEY.) 32360-2663
