Gerald D. Crowley rescued David M. Poole from assault, Holyoke, Massachusetts, May 18, 1986. Poole, 37, a police officer patrolling a resort complex, was attacked by a mob of unruly youths, one of whom wrestled him to the ground and was attempting to remove his gun from its holster. Crowley, 35, assistant operations foreman at the complex, heard the commotion and ran to the scene, where he found a crowd watching the assault. Undeterred, Crowley dived into the fray and wrestled with the assailant who was attempting to get Poole’s, gun. During the struggle, Crowley was kicked and punched by the assailants. Shortly, the assailants fled. Poole required hospital treatment for cracked ribs, and Crowley for a chest contusion, from which he recovered.
