Gerald Edmund Shanley, 47, milk tester, died attempting to save Carl A. Beverly, 7, from drowning, Brady Lake, Ohio, January 6, 1946. Carl broke through ice on Brady Lake into water 16 feet deep 75 feet from the bank. He clung to the ice in a hole three feet in diameter. Knowing the ice was unsafe, Shanley ran to the bank where two small doors lay. Alternately walking on one door and placing the other ahead of it, Shanley got within three feet of the hole. Lying prone on a door, he placed the other one between him and the hole and pulled Carl out. The ice broke beneath the doors; and Shanley and Carl fell into the water and were submerged. They rose together. Carl on Shanley’s back clung to him around his neck several minutes and then both sank and were drowned. 40596-3441
