Gerald C. Pape saved Rosalie M. Karmik from being struck by a train, Palatine, Illinois, October 20, 1977. While running along a walkway at a railroad station, Miss Karmik, 18, fell between the rails of a track on which a passenger train was approaching for a stop. Pape, 24, account representative, ran into the path of the train to Miss Karmik’s position. As Pape took hold of Miss Karmik and yanked her toward him, he toppled backward and fell. Miss Karmik landed on top of Pape. The train barely missed them as it passed, stopping about 300 feet beyond them.
