Gerald L. Paskiet saved Robert L. Townsend from drowning, Ypsilanti, Michigan, August 22, 1951. In attempting to retrieve a fishing pole, Robert, 9, who could not swim, got into deep water in the Huron River and repeatedly was submerged 25 feet from the bank. The 12-year-old brother of Robert lunged toward him but quickly sank and was drowned. Gerald, 14, schoolboy, despite the pleas of his mother, descended the bank and swam to Robert, who was floundering. Robert kicked Gerald in the stomach and grasped him at the neck with both hands. Gerald broke Robert’s hold and swam pushing him 15 feet to wadable water and thence aided him to the bank. The body of Robert’s brother was recovered in an hour. Robert recovered. 42418-3764
