Gernot Kurt Fischer saved Marilyn Berger from drowning, Ottawa, Ontario, December 8, 1977. Fischer, 36, Royal Canadian Mounted Police administrator, saw Miss Berger, 35, being carried downstream in the Rideau River, along the banks of which ice had formed. Removing only his jacket, Fischer moved onto the ice and thence into the water, where he swam diagonally across the current and overtook Miss Berger. He held Miss Berger’s head above water as he towed her toward the bank, from which others had extended a ladder onto the ice. With Miss Berger, Fischer reached the ladder and by it was aided to the bank.
