Geronimo M. Barreras rescued Rosario G. Talamantes from assault, Mesquite, New Mexico, December 2, 1987. In a church social hall, Mrs. Talamantes, 24, homemaker, was shot twice in the neck by a man armed with a semi-automatic pistol. Barreras, 37, telephone technician, heard the shots and ran to the hall, where he saw the assailant, still armed, leaning over Mrs. Talamantes. Barreras ran to the assailant and tackled him. A struggle for the gun ensued, and Barreras secured it. Barreras then subdued the assailant until police arrived. Mrs. Talamantes required three months’ hospitalization for her injuries, which left her a quadriplegic.
