Gertrude Sharpsteen, 17, housekeeper, saved Gertrude E. Downie, 4, from being run over by a train, Spencer, New York, August 31, 1909. As she rushed across the track, in front of a passenger train running 40 m.p.h., Miss Sharpsteen shoved the child from the track, where she had wandered. Miss Sharpsteen was struck before she could get out of the engine’s path and was knocked to the ground, sustaining a comminuted fracture of the right elbow. 4424-399
