Gilbert A. White, 31, insurance adjuster, attempted to save J. Daniel Laney, 12, schoolboy, from being struck by an automobile, Belle Glade, Florida. November 13, 1954. Daniel rode his bicycle along tile edge of an asphalt highway on which White and another man were approaching in an automobile. White saw Daniel, steered to the center of the roadway, and applied the foot brake. When the automobile was 50 feet from Daniel, he suddenly turned his bicycle into its path. White made a full application of brakes and swerved toward the opposite side of the highway. Skidding, the automobile struck the bicycle; and Daniel was thrown unconscious to the highway. He landed clear of the automobile, which ran off the highway, continued down a steep six-foot bank, and plunged into a drainage canal. Drifting to deep water 10 feet from the bank, the vehicle listed and began sinking. White, who thrust himself outside through an open window, pulled his companion from the automobile; and they swam to the bank and went to Daniel. He had sustained only minor injuries and soon revived. 43333-3988
