Gladys G. Graeber, 19, saved John R. Chambers, 22, warehouseman, from drowning, Mesa Grande, California, May 26, 1915. While swimming in the Russian River, Chambers was seized with a cramp and could not use his legs. He went under the surface several times. Miss Graeber, who was heavily dressed, ran from the bank and swam to Chambers. She took hold of him at his chest, held him at arm’s length, and swam 50 feet with him to wadable water. Chambers was dazed but revived. Miss Graeber was hysterical and very tired. 15049-1490
