Glen A. Randall, 26, contractor, died attempting to save John R. Hayhurst, 45, grocer, from drowning, Claude, Texas, January 13, 1924. Hayhurst, while duck hunting, crawled over thin ice 1,000 feet from the shore of a large lake and then broke through into deep water. Randall, knowing the ice was dangerous and having been warned by two men not to go, ran quickly over the ice from shore to within 10 feet of the hole. While the ice bent and cracked under him, Randall threw a rope to Hayhurst, who tied it around his waist. Randall twice pulled Hayhurst partly out of the hole, but each time the ice broke at the edge of the hole. Randall then lost hold of the rope. He moved closer to the hole and recovered the rope, but the ice gave way under him, and he fell in. He was unable to climb out of the hole, and he and Hayhurst were drowned. 23953-1952
