Glen M. Carter saved Raymond E. Taylor from being killed by a train, MacAlpin, West Virginia, January 30, 1931. Raymond, 9, schoolboy, walked on a track on which a freight train was approaching at a speed of 25 m.p.h. Carter, 19, schoolboy, called to him to get off the track, but Raymond became frightened and did not move. Facing the train, Carter then ran 15 feet along the track and 10 feet on the track and reached Raymond when the locomotive was six feet from him. Without stopping, Carter grasped Raymond’s shoulder with one hand and shoved him ahead of himself off the track. They barely escaped being struck.
