Glenn B. Eastman died attempting to save Howard J. Rogers from drowning, Iowa Falls, Iowa, August 9, 1913. Howard, 15, student, who could not swim, got into deep water in the Iowa River and went beneath the surface. A young man waded to the edge of wadable water and extended his hand, and Howard pulled him into deep water. They struggled and went beneath the surface twice, then the young man freed himself and swam away from Howard. He had called for help, and Eastman, 21, farmhand, started toward Howard. Eastman was a poor swimmer. He swam close to Howard, and then the current carried him away from Howard. Eastman called to another young man, who arrived on the scene, to save Howard. Eastman then struggled for a short time and sank and was drowned. The other young man swam out and got Howard, who had become unconscious. He was revived. 13106-1044
