Glenn Thomas Siron, Jr., attempted to rescue Susan K. Stark and Joshua A. Fugitt from a runaway automobile, Pekin, Illinois, April 11, 1990. Miss Stark, 26, accompanied by Joshua, 2, was driving a car on a busy, four- lane highway when a medical condition caused her to black out. The car continued traveling, going into lanes of opposing traffic. Siron, 22, emergency medical technician, was the passenger of an ambulance that was approaching the scene when he saw the runaway car. Siron jumped from the moving ambulance and pursued Miss Stark’s car on foot. Arriving at the driver’s side of the car as it traveled about 10 m.p.h., Siron opened the door to gain access to the gearshift. Another man had also pursued the car and arrived at its passenger side; he opened that door, entered the car, and disengaged the car’s gears, taking the car to a stop.
