Glenna L. Campbell attempted to save Dora C. Patterson from drowning, Dayton, Kentucky, August 10, 1941. While wading in the Ohio River, Miss Patterson, 21, lost her footing. A man swam several feet to her, and she threw her arms around his neck. They were submerged briefly twice, drifting in water eight feet deep 25 feet from the bank. Miss Patterson released the man, and he sank and was drowned. Miss Patterson then threw her arms around Miss Campbell, 20, saleswoman, who meanwhile had waded and swum 10 feet to her; and they were submerged briefly three times. Miss Campbell broke Miss Patterson’s hold; and again they were submerged, Miss Patterson getting hold of Miss Campbell and pulling her to the bottom. A youth, who was a good swimmer, then dived, got hold of Miss Campbell, freed her, and towed her to the bank. Miss Campbell, who was semiconscious, was revived. Miss Patterson was drowned. 39406-3253
