Glenwood E. Dishaw, Jr., died attempting to save Richard A. Spina from drowning, Scriba, New York, July 23, 1991. Spina, 19, called for help while swimming in Lake Ontario; very rough water conditions precluded his making it back to shore, which in that area was a 15-foot-high cliff. One of three friends who were with him on the outing, Dishaw, 19, jumped into the water from atop the cliff and swam to him. Dishaw grasped Spina around the waist, but they submerged repeatedly. With difficulty, Spina swam to the base of the cliff, from where he was removed shortly by arriving rescue personnel. Dishaw submerged and did not resurface. His body was recovered from the lake two days later.
