Glorianne Benson, 15, schoolgirl, died attempting to save Ruth J. Bargen, 8, from drowning, Frontenac, Minnesota, July 30, 1943. While wading off Point au Sable in Lake Pepin, Ruth became frightened and grabbed her older sister. Both drifted into deeper water, Ruth struggling frantically. Miss Benson waded from shore and swam 35 feet toward them, gave a younger girl a shove to enable her to get to wadable water, and swam 55 feet farther to Ruth and her sister, who were in water 15 feet deep. She said she would take Ruth, and Ruth’s sister broke Ruth’s hold and pushed her to Miss Benson. Ruth clasped her arms around Miss Benson’s neck, and a struggle ensued. Both were drowned. 40050-3370
