Grace L. Bell saved Alice Hudson from drowning, Peebles, Wisconsin, June 23, 1912. While the young women were swimming in Lake Winnebago, Miss Hudson, 22, became distressed at a point 40 feet from a breakwater, to which one could cling. She went beneath the surface twice in water six feet deep and called to Miss Bell, 18, student, the only person near who could help her. Miss Bell immediately swam 60 feet and reached Miss Hudson as she was going beneath the surface. Miss Hudson grasped Miss Bell’s legs and pulled her down until Miss Bell’s feet touched bottom. Miss Bell sprang upward and reached the surface with Miss Hudson. She broke Miss Hudson’s hold, but Miss Hudson grasped her right shoulder from behind and prevented her from using her right arm. Miss Bell got a breath of air, and then she was again forced beneath the surface. Miss Bell swam 60 feet with Miss Hudson, then Miss Hudson grasped the end of a pole that was extended to her, and she and Miss Bell were helped from the water. 8926-1017
