Grace Laura Wells, 14, schoolgirl, attempted to save Dorothy J. Stell, 10, from drowning, Orchard Lake, Michigan, August 10, 1930. While Dorothy was holding a 15-inch inflated ball and floating on Middle Straits Lake, she drifted to deep water 130 feet from the bank. Grace, who was a poor swimmer, waded a few feet toward her and then on water wings swam 50 feet to her. Dorothy took hold of Grace’s bathing suit, and Grace began to swim. A struggle followed, in which both were submerged several times. Finally they rose separated, and Dorothy had the water wings. Grace struggled to keep at the surface. Dorothy was rescued by a man with a boat, and Grace was rescued by another man. Both of the girls were unconscious but were revived.
