Grace Mildred Stearns saved Charles A. Plastridge, Jr., from drowning, Alton Bay, New Hampshire, July 17, 1933. While Charles, 14, schoolboy, was swimming in Alton Bay, he got into distress in water eight feet deep at a point 215 feet from the shore. Miss Stearns, 20, student, swam 35 feet from a raft toward Charles, who then was under the surface. She dived, grasped Charles by the hair, and swam to the surface. As Miss Stearns swam and with great effort towed Charles, he struggled and caused her to be momentarily submerged twice. After she had towed him 10 feet, he got hold of one of her shoulder straps, and she could not get free. A man waded and swam to her from the shore, took hold of Charles, and then swam and towed him to wadable water. Charles, who was semiconscious, was supported to the shore and was revived. Miss Stearns swam unaided 25 feet to wadable water. 33246-2778
