Grant A. Reed, 35, farmer, saved Claude V. Shearer, 21, automobile mechanic, from drowning, Townsend, Montana, June 26, 1919. While learning to swim in the Missouri River, Shearer grasped the man who was teaching him, and both sank in deep water 40 feet from the bank. They rose, and Shearer’s companion freed himself and attempted to aid Shearer, but Shearer grasped him and submerged him again. He then left Shearer. Two other men swam to Shearer and attempted to aid him, but their efforts were not effective. Reed swam 285 feet to Shearer and took hold of him from behind. Shearer tried to grasp Reed, but Reed cautiously kept behind him. Reed was tired, and he trod water and supported Shearer while they were carried by an eddy 50 feet to wadable water. 19777-1658
