Grant P. Chapman, 21, orderly, died attempting to save Vera Daugherty, 19, from drowning, Banta, California, September 18, 1927. While Miss Daugherty was floating in the San Joaquin River, she drifted into water 12 feet deep 20 feet from the bank and became distressed. Chapman, who was a poor swimmer, swam from wadable water 90 feet to her, lifted her, and gave her a shove toward the bank. Immediately afterward Chapman was caught in a whirl and called for help. He was submerged at least six times and finally sank and drowned. Miss Daugherty was aided to the bank by another man. 27880-2267
