Greenville F. Crisp, 27, laborer, died attempting to save Levi J. Shugart, 41, laborer, from suffocation, Brady, Texas, September 18, 1922. Shugart was overcome by gas just after he had been lowered to the bottom of a well, 26 feet deep, following a blast of powder and dynamite. Crisp, who arrived at the well just after the accident, had two men lower him to the bottom on a bucket, but he almost immediately called to be drawn up. They started to raise him, but he fell back to the bottom. When he and Shugart were taken out an hour later by a man who descended wearing a gas mask, they were dead. 22898-1859
