Gregory Dale Friddle assisted in an attempt to save Howard O. Bare from burning, Cosmopolis, Washington, January 13, 1978. In a highway collision, the truck being driven by Bare overturned onto its side and caught fire. Friddle, 31, truckdriver, ran to the burning truck and joined another truckdriver in trying without success to find a way to remove Bare, who was pinned inside the cab. An explosion occurred, increasing the flames and setting fire to Friddle and the other truckdriver, both of whom put out the flames on their attire. When the overturned truck was righted, Bare was removed from the cab; but he had burned to death. Friddle required hospitalization for burns he had sustained.
