Gregory Dean Morrow rescued Nellie M. Swaney from burning, Hendersonville, North Carolina, May 13, 1989. Mrs. Swaney, 70, was in her house when fire broke out. Working nearby, Morrow, 39, fork lift operator, was alerted to the fire and ran to the house, where he called to Mrs. Swaney. When she responded, Morrow dropped to his hands and knees and crawled part way into the house, but he was forced out by the dense smoke, which obscured his vision, and intense beat. He crawled in again, farther, but again was forced to retreat. Crawling in a third time, Morrow located Mrs. Swaney on the kitchen floor and dragged her out of the house. Mrs. Swaney, who sustained extensive burns, died 11 days later. Morrow sustained minor burns, from which he recovered.
