Gregory W. Dickens attempted to save Anthony W. Lamb and Morris A. Neeley from suffocation, Winona, Texas, May 29, 1985. After Lamb, 24, was rendered unconscious while working in a sewer, Neeley, 49, entered the sewer to save him and was also overcome. Gregory, 16, high school student, was alerted and went to the scene. Taking a rope, he entered the sewer’s manhole and descended on a ladder that extended to the bottom of the shaft in which Lamb and Neeley lay. As he was attaching the rope to Neeley, Gregory was rendered unconscious. A chemical company laborer who had arrived tied a rope around his chest; as his foreman at ground level held the other end of the rope, the laborer descended the shaft, tied Gregory’s rope around Neeley, and returned to the surface, where he and the foreman pulled Neeley from the shaft. In a similar manner, the laborer and his foreman removed Gregory and then Lamb. Gregory and Neeley recovered after hospitalization, but Lamb died. 60418-7021
