Griffith William Roberts, 14, schoolboy, saved Bernece, 17, and William T. Cox, 49, post office superintendent, from drowning, Sunapee, New Hampshire, August 21, 1921. Bernece became frightened while swimming in deep water in Lake Sunapee 33 feet from shore, and she grasped Griffith’s sister, who swam to her. Cox then entered to aid his daughter, and the two girls grasped him and held him under water. Griffith waded 20 feet from the bank and swam 15 feet to them. After taking his sister to shallow water, he swam to Bernece and took her to wadable water. She and her father were practically unconscious. Then Griffith swam 15 feet to Cox, grasped him, and swam with him to wadable water, going under water twice as he swam. 21818-1943
