Grover C. Brewer, 41, clergyman, saved three unidentified children from a rabid dog, Sherman, Texas, January 22, 1926. Brewer saw the dog snap a child, noted foam at its mouth, and thought it was mad. He pursued it but desisted when he saw a policeman was also in pursuit of it. Later Brewer saw the dog in an alley approaching close to a street where three children were. Brewer motioned to the children to stay back. At that time the dog turned toward the children. Brewer started to remove his overcoat to use it to capture the dog, but it sprang at him and struck him on the breast with both paws. Brewer caught hold of its throat, and it snapped his left wrist. With great difficulty Brewer held the dog, which weighed 50 pounds, for several minutes until a man arrived and shot it. Brewer took Pasteurian treatment and suffered no serious effects. 26339-2288
