Guillermo Rangel helped to save Crystal L., Savannah C., Ciera D., and Skyler L. Pape from burning, McQueeney, Texas, January 18, 1996. Ms. Pape, 25, and her children Savannah, 1; Ciera, 3, and Skyler, 5, were in a bedroom in one end of the family’s mobile home after fire erupted near the other end. Rangel, 36, maintenance man at the mobile home park, responded to the scene after seeing smoke, as did others. He made repeated entries through a broken window into the bedroom in search of Ms. Pape and the children, despite dense, black smoke which precluded visibility. Finding Ms. Pape and the children, all of whom were unconscious, Rangel took them to the window, where others aided in their removal. Ms. Pape and the children were hospitalized for treatment of smoke inhalation, and they recovered. Rangel was treated at both the scene and the emergency room for smoke inhalation, and he too recovered.
