Gus R. Ashworth attempted to save John E. Wells from being killed by a train, Martinsville, Virginia, November 4, 1919. Wells, 81, started over a railroad crossing at the time a train was approaching at a speed of 30 m.p.h. Ashworth, 24, clerk, holding a babe in his arm, ran from the station platform about 27 feet to the track and across it and caught the sleeve of Wells in an insecure hold as Wells was about to step between the rails of the track. The sleeve tore, and without getting a second hold, Ashworth got across the track, only his hand being struck by the locomotive, and the babe dropped safely to the ground. Wells was struck by the bumper timber of the locomotive and died as a result of his injuries. 20081-1769
