Gustave Rossi, 52, truck driver, rescued Philip McHugh from suffocation. San Francisco, California, August 24, 1938. Rossi knew that McHugh had been overcome by gas soon after entering the manhole. Holding his breath, Rossi descended to McHugh, hooked the rope around him, climbed up two steps, and then returned to the bottom and adjusted the rope, which had come loose. He was in the manhole for a minute, and he suffered from slight dizziness. (See case of PHILIP MCHUGH)
