Guy Arvid Nelson rescued Ruth M. Bacon from burning, Des Moines, Iowa, December 11, 1977. At night, fire broke out in a church rectory where Mrs. Bacon, 76, was sleeping in a first-floor bedroom. Despite intense heat and smoke, Nelson, 25, tavern assistant manager, entered via the rear door and, passing close to the flames, made his way to where Mrs. Bacon lay unconscious on the hallway floor. Nelson dragged Mrs. Bacon to near the rear door and then was aided in taking her outside. She recovered after hospitalization.
