Guy L. Stanford died attempting to save Jewel Ball from drowning, San Angelo, Texas, July 4, 1922. Jewel, 17, while wading in overflow water of the North Concho River, was swept off her feet by a swift current. She was carried to a tree stump at the bank, to which she clung. Stanford, 39, shoemaker, waded to the stump and extended his hand to take hold of Jewel, but she immediately sprang at him and caught hold of his shoulders, causing him to lose his footing. He and Jewell were carried by the current into deep water, Stanford being unable to swim because of Jewell’s hold. Both were drowned. 22556-1758
