H. Bunyan Thomas died attempting to save J. Thomas Terry from suffocation, Monroe, North Carolina, September 9, 1925. While Terry, 49, farmer, was helping to deepen a well, he was overcome by carbon dioxide at the bottom of the well. Thomas, 33, farmer, although he had recently suffered slight ill effects while working in his own well and had stated he would never enter a well again, descended a ladder to Terry, followed by another man. He tied a rope around Terry and was preparing to fasten it to a rope attached to a windlass at the top when his companion suggested that they had better get out. The man ascended the ladder, and Thomas started up after him. When Thomas was four feet from the bottom, he fell. A few minutes later Thomas and Terry were removed from the well by men who had ropes tied to them. Thomas and Terry could not be revived. 25548-2024
